City Planner Hosting Working Sessions on Flood Resilience, Starting Thursday

Rye City and its planner Christian K. Miller will be running sessions for residents and business owners on how to build back better after the flood. The sessions will be held at 10am every Tuesday and Thursday in the Council Chambers of Rye City Hall for the next month.

“It is meant to be a work session,” City Manager Greg Usry told MyRye.com. “There is some structure but also driven by those attending. Anyone that can’t attend and needs the info, the Building Department stands ready to help individuals. This is a priority for the City to assist those rebuilding and more so anyone wishing to do additional mitigation.”

“Helping Flood-Damaged Residents and Businesses Rebuild Better After a Flood

Starting this Thursday, September 16, 2021, at 10:00 AM in the Council Chambers of Rye City Hall, the City Planner will conduct sessions providing technical assistance to property owners, businesses and design professionals who are interested in strategies to make homes and businesses more flood resistant. These strategies would include elevating a building, flood-proofing a business, building a new flood-compliant structure or other strategies to better protect life and property from future flood events.

These informal and iterative sessions will be conducted every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 10:00 for the next month and will cover the following:

FEMA flood construction requirements
Repair of damaged property considerations
City of Rye land use board and permitting process
FEMA funding opportunities for mitigation projects
Review of 100-year flood elevations in your neighborhood or property
The importance of understanding “Substantial Improvement”
Previous flood mitigation experiences in Rye
