William N. Andrew

William N. Andrew was born on January 17, 1919, to parents John Andrew and Jemima Gordon. They resided together at 199 Purchase Street in Rye, New York. William was the youngest of four siblings, with brothers; John, Bruce and Alexander. Their home was rented for $50 per month.

He attended Rye High School, graduating in the class of 1937. Throughout his education, William actively participated in Band, Orchestra, and Dance Orchestra. Following his graduation, he pursued a career as a Bookkeeper. In 1939, he worked 38 weeks of the year, earning $726. In the last week of March 1940, he worked a total of 44 hours.

William enlisted in the U.S. Military on March 19, 1941. During World War II, he served as a 1st Lt. in the U.S. Army Ordnance Division, with assignments in the Pacific Theatre, including the Battle for Okinawa. He spent two years serving stateside, followed by two and a half years in the Hawaiian islands, and seven months on Okinawa.

On October 31, 1942, William married Bertha Johnson. Throughout his professional life, he worked at Pitney Bowes in Stamford, CT for 35 years, ultimately retiring in 1991 as a supervisor in the Quality Control Department.

William was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Turn of River Presbyterian Church in Stamford, CT. He was actively involved in the South Congregational Church of Newport, NH, as well as the Brewster-Gould-Lee-Rollins Post #25 American Legion in Newport. He was also affiliated with national chapters of the VFW and Amvets.

On November 28, 2015, William N. Andrew passed away at the home of his nephew, Roger Anyan. From 2006 until his death, he had been a resident of Unity, New London, and Newport, NH. He was predeceased by his two wives, Bertha J. Andrew, a renowned watercolor artist, and Shirley Andrew, as well as his three brothers, Jack, Alexander, and Bruce. More on Andrew.
