Defense Shines for Rye Football in Second Straight Shutout
The Rye Football team scored its fewest points yet this season in Week 5, but still found a way to win by a 14-0 score over the Eastchester Eagles on Sunday to improve to a 6 – 0 season. It is the Garnets’ second straight shutout, and moved them to 4-0 in league play.
“Today was another standout effort by the defense,” Head Coach Dino Garr told MyRye.com after the game. “The linebacker play of Andrew Wilmarth, Jake Kessner, Luke Denvir and Nigel Strazzini, and defensive line play of Connor Brady, Owen Saya, Hunter Gillies, and Patrick McGuire all contributed to our total team defense. Secondary play by Thomas Goldszer and Sebastian Lewis were also instrumental.”
Archer Fenton and Henry Shoemaker each had an interception in a total team effort on the defensive side of the ball. On special teams, Wilmarth blocked a punt, and Henry Shoemaker knocked both his PATs (point after touchdown) down.
“On the offensive side, Ty Ramachandran had an outstanding game running the ball, scoring on a pass from Carson Miller,” Garr continued. “Our offensive line of Patrick McGuire, Connor Brady, Charlie Ross, Carsten Steinmann, and Peter Olkhovetz continued its steady improvement and helped secure both the running and passing game.”
Beyond Ramachandran, Rye’s other touchdown was scored by a Carson Miller run. Despite struggling through the air, Miller made plays with his legs, including his second quarter score.
Neither team scored in the second half, as a 14-0 lead for the Garnets after 30 minutes held up.
Rye (6-0, 4-0) has a short week to get prepared for their next game, another road contest at Yorktown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm on Friday, October 18.
