The Rye Boys Golf team concluded their season on Wednesday, May 28, as six Garnets took to Sleepy Hollow for round two of the 2025 Section 1 tournament. Rye sent more athletes than any other school to the event, and four of them found great success.
Rye’s day was highlighted by sophomore Derek Bisceglia, who shot a 152 across the two-day event (round one was Monday, May 19) to tie for fourth place overall out of the 32-man field. The placement cutoff for automatic qualification for states is ninth place (10th does not qualify), meaning Bisceglia earned a spot in States with ease.
“Derek has played his best golf at the right time,” Head Coach Pat Romano told MyRye.com on June 3. “He played two solid rounds of golf in sectionals and will now compete for a state championship.”
Bisceglia will participate in the two-day state tournament beginning today, Sunday June 8, which continues with round two tomorrow 6/9.
A trio of freshman all placed top 20 for Romano as well, with Ryan Mascali (161), Graham Erickson (164), and Ryker Kevorkian (164) all earning All-Section honors for their excellent play all season and on May 19 and 28. Erickson and Mascali both shot impressive 80s on the final day to secure their spot, while Kevorkian’s 79 on the first day of sectionals gave him just enough breathing room to hold onto top 20.
The other two Garnet representatives who missed the cut were Lawton Wydra (169) and Rocco DeFife (173). However, just making it to day two of the sectional tournament is an achievement in itself, and Romano recognized the efforts of all of his qualifiers.
“I am very proud of all six players making the cut and then playing well on a very tough Sleepy Hollow Golf course,” Romano told MyRye.com.
Bisceglia will look to create one final lasting memory in the 2025 season for the Garnets, who finished the year 13-1-1 and as league champions.
