The Rye Boys Tennis team went 7-6 in 2025, good enough to qualify for sectional semifinals before losing to Horace Greeley. With most of the roster back for Head Coach Sue Dickson in her 19th year at the helm, the Garnets should see some of their close losses from last year flip to exciting wins in what could be a sensational season.
“2026 looks to be a stronger team than the 2025 team… just about all the players are returning,” Dickson told MyRye.com before the campaign. “The boys have been working hard on their tennis in the offseason, and many play tournaments outside of school.”
The roster is strong, including the likes of senior Henry Groves, Lou Kim-Reutuer, and Filip Glitterstam. Groves will open the season as the top singles player for Dickson, while Kim-Reuter and Glitterstam will comrpise the #1 doubles pairing. Talented returner and clutch postseason performer from one year ago Luke Gordon has the inside edge to slot in as singles #2, with strong competition for the third singles opening between Marcos Becker, Timothy Morell, and his brother Xavier Morell. However, nothing is finalized until tryouts conclude.
“The lineup is not set as yet, tryouts are still in progress,” Dickson confirmed. “52 players have come out for Rye Tennis and we will have full Varsity 1, V2, and JV rosters.”
Kim-Reuter and Glitterstam were co-captains as juniors in 2025 en route to earning All-Section honors. They should be the favorites to lead the 2026 team captaincy voting, which occurs shortly, according to Dickson. “Lou Kim-Reuter and Filip Glitterstam – All-Section winners last year – will lead the group.”
While there is still plenty of mixing and matching to do in doubles spots 2-4, Dickson believes the experience of those trying out makes doubles a strength once again for the Garnets. When healthy, the Garnets may have zero players in the starting 11 for any given match to be varsity rookies.
Of course, Rye is not the only team in the area with serious talent. Both the Garnets’ section and league feature Horace Greeley and Scarsdale, while Mamaroneck also lurks on the schedule. “We look forward to all our matches but get excited to play Scarsdale, Horace Greeley, and Mamaroneck,” Dickson told MyRye.com. “Last year we had close matches with all those teams but lost twice to Scarsdale and Horace Greeley… We hope we can rise to the challenges in front of us.”
League play kicks off with a bang on March 26, with Rye visiting Mamaroneck at 4:30pm. They will have to hope preseason tryouts and practices got them into game shape, as opening the year with the Tigers is hardly a ramp-up. Thankfully, Dickson believes team chemistry will not be an issue.
“Despite tennis being an individual sport, we have a great cohesive team that can propel each other to play their best,” the head coach said.
Rye has 14 regular season games on the docket for spring 2026, although each one is weather dependent. The postseason begins in mid-May and extends for as long as the Garnets keep winning.
