The Rye Girls Tennis team bounced back from their previous two losses to top Mamaroneck on Thursday, September 24, as they won the home match 5-2. Rye had lost their previous two contests, but stood strong on Thursday to earn their second win of the season over the neighboring Tigers.
“The doubles team of captain Paloma Pepper and Sofia Echlov won in dominant fashion,” head coach Tony Campbell told MyRye.com. “Sofia’s precise groundstrokes combined with Paloma’s smothering net play has been tough for opponents to deal with.”
Pepper and Echlov won their matchup rather comfortably, 6-3, 6-1. They displayed both superior offense and defense in their victory.
Another success story for the Garnets on Thursday night was Rosie Zicherman and Natalie Hofmann, a new doubles pairing which also came out victorious in straight sets. Their convincing 6-2, 6-2 win helped the Garnets snap their small two-match skid and get back on track with their fourth win of the fall.
Rye will take a 4-2 record into this weekend’s Georgia Williams Memorial Tournament, an event focused more on impact than competitive results. The tournament’s purpose is to raise money for a scholarship in the name of Georgia Williams, a Nyack HS English teacher who sadly passed away due to breast cancer. Rye and all the other teams in attendance will play modified competition while simultaneously – and more importantly – supporting the off-court cause.
