The Rye Football team improved to 3-1 with a hard-fought road victory against Mount Vernon on Thursday, September 24, as they defeated the Knights 35-12. The Garnets took to a very cool Memorial Field for their Week 3 matchup and came away with a solid, albeit not perfect, victory.
“We had a really good team effort against Mount Vernon,” head coach Dino Garr told MyRye.com after the win. “We still have to cut down on some of the mistakes we’ve made. We took too many penalties again.”
Rye won despite their starting quarterback, senior Charlie Brady, suffering a lower-body injury on the second play from scrimmage. That left the door open for Johnny Shoemaker, a sophomore and younger brother of last year’s star wide receiver Henry Shoemaker, to step in and run the offense. Shoemaker led five scoring drives to earn his first varsity victory.
“Johnny came in and did a great job running the team,” Garr said.
Rye’s defense stood strong to allow the young quarterback to settle into his first stressful action of the season. Garr managed to let some of his reserves make a late impact off the bench after Rye built a solid lead.
Rye (3-1) has arguably their toughest test of the season coming up in Week 4. The Garnets face Somers on the road on Friday, October 2, a rivalry which renews at 6:30pm at Somers High School. At this time, is it unclear who will start at QB for the Garnets.
