The third-seeded Rye Girls Tennis team swept Harrison 7-0 in the first round of the sectional tournament on Monday, October 19, as they advanced to the semifinals without much of a sweat. The Garnets celebrated their six seniors prior to the match in their final contest on home soil of the 2026 campaign before extending their season at least one more match.
“All the seniors in the lineup had dominant victories, inspired by the wonderful dedication event put on by their underclassmen teammates and parents,” head coach Tony Campbell told MyRye.com.
Senior Iciar Garate was the first off the court following her seamless 6-1, 6-0 singles win. Rosie Zicherman and Caroline May followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win in doubles. The doubles team of senior co-captains Ella Poole and Paloma Pepper, who have been doubles stars for Campbell for five full years, notched yet another quick victory by a 6-1, 6-2 score. Senior co-captain Alex DiMeo closed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 singles win against Bell Smyth, whom Campbell called a “classy All-Section captain from Harrison.”
Rye (7-4, 1-0 postseason) gets another rematch with Scarsdale tomorrow, Wednesday 10/21, in the semifinals. The Garnets and #2 Raiders will meet for a fourth consecutive season with a trip to the section finals on the line. The match begins at 4:30 at Scarsdale High School.
