RYE GARNETS VERSUS RAVENA-COEYMANS-SELKIRK INDIANS – SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 25 @ 3:00PM @ MIDDLETOWN HIGH SCHOOL, MIDDLETOWN, NY

This week – Some Q & A with the “Old Garnet”

Q:  Why is Ravena still called the Indians while Nyack, Mahopac, Ossining and John Jay – Cross River of Section One were forced to drop their Indian-related mascots?

A: One of two reasons (1) NYS School Districts have been given time to implement the mascot changeover, or (2) local tribes have given their usage permission like Florida State University and the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

Q:  Why are they called the team from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk?

A:  Smaller upstate communities do not have the sufficient school-age population to offer a full palette of educational opportunities, so they merge into what are called “Central School Districts” for critical mass of student population and educational offerings.

Q:  How have the Indians performed this season?

A(1):  Ravena is undefeated with an 11-0 record against such schools as O’Neill, Cairo Durham, Green Tech, Hoosic Valley, Shalmont, Lansingburgh, Ichabod Crane, Gloversville, Mechanicsville, Glens Falls and Peru. Rye is 10-2 for the 2023 campaign.

A(2):  For the 2023 season the Green and Gold have outscored their opponents by a 318-point margin. Rye’s Garnets carry a 235-point spread over their adversaries.

A(3):  Ravena has scored 412 points this season – Rye 385.

Q:  Does Ravena have any NYS Championships?

A(1): No, but in 1996 Ravena was the Class B Runner-up. In NYS Finals Rye is 3-3 wearing state crowns to conclude the 2004, 2005 and 2007 seasons.

A(2): The Garnet and Black and Ravena have met once in the state tourney with Rye being the 21-14 victor.

It may not be politically correct, but the

GARNETS SCALP THE INDIANS – 28-14

  1. Didn’t think I’d see the time I’d be correcting the old garnet, but Rye won the state tournament in 2005, 2007, and 2008.
