PD responded to Webster Bank on 72 Purchase Street on a report of a person trying to cash a check with a possible fraudulent ID card. Upon arrival, police officers spoke with the bank teller who stated at approximately 3:00pm, a male later identified as 48 year old Jose Urena of New York City, entered the bank wearing a suit jacket and a hat.

Urena told the teller that he wanted to withdraw $20,000.00 USD out of his Webster bank account. Webster bank’s fraud department was notified. They reached out to the victim and he stated, he was currently not in New York and he did not attempt to make a withdrawal from his account.

Urena handed the teller a Connecticut ID card with the victim’s information on it and Urena’s photo. The teller continued to question Urena until Rye Officers arrived on scene and placed Urena under arrest. Jose Urena was processed and charged with Possession of a Forged Instrument 3rd degree and Criminal Impersonation 2nd degree both class A Misdemeanors. Mr. Urena was released with a desk appearance ticket returnable to Rye City Court on Tuesday May 13, 2025 at 9:00am.
