The Rye Boys Tennis team dropped their semifinal match in the 2025 Section 1 Tournament on Monday, May 19, falling 4-3 to Horace Greeley. The Garnets put up an excellent fight as underdogs, but were unable to come out on top against a tough Quaker squad.
“The season ended for the Garnets today, but they played with heart and the support of their teammates and parents,” Head Coach Sue Dickson told MyRye.com after the match. “I couldn’t be more proud of these guys. They are spirited, play with heart, and always work to improve their game. They have been a joy to coach.”
The format was identical to the quarterfinal win against JJCR: the first matchup chronologically was at fourth doubles, then third, second, top doubles, then third singles, second, and first. Fourth doubles found a way to win in a super tiebreaker 10-8 to get the Garnets on the board. Next, Xavier Morell and Tayga Vural handled their opponents 6-2, 6-1. The Quakers cut the lead in half at second doubles, but Rye responded at first with a 7-5, 6-2 win from Lou Kim-Reuter and Filip Glitterstam. However, Horace Greeley won all three singles bouts to take home the 4-3 comeback victory.
The heartbreaking loss ended Rye’s season, on the doorstep of the sectional finals. They finish 7-6 with plenty of close losses and exciting wins throughout the season.
“Although we will miss the leadership of the lone senior Alex Gordon, we have a lot of potential for the future with such a young team,” Dickson said in her closing remarks. “I just love these players. They are good people and talented athletes. We have so much to build upon.”
