The City of Rye’s Human Rights Commission (read Meet the Human Rights Commission and its Chair Rita Capek) is looking for nominations for its youth human rights award. Nominations are due by Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2025. To be eligible, an individual must be 18 years of age or younger, live in Rye or attend any of the schools in Rye City or Rye Neck. The nominee “is an individual or organization whose efforts in the academic year 2024/25 have made an important contribution to fostering human rights and/or relations in Rye City”. Nominations can be made online.

In February, Dave Thomas, the President of Friends of the African American Cemetery, won the Human Rights Commission Award for 2024. The Youth Human Rights Award will be awarded in fall, a change from prior years. In early 2024, the Human Rights Commission announced the 2023 youth winner – an award shared by then Rye Neck High School senior Clara Reis and Rye High School senior Paulina Tepan.
