George Joseph Kirby, born on February 4, 1998, in Rye, New York, is a professional baseball pitcher and a rising star for the Seattle Mariners in Major League Baseball (MLB). Known for his exceptional control, poise on the mound, and work ethic, Kirby was named an MLB All-Star in 2023 and has quickly emerged as one of the most promising pitchers of his generation.
Early Life and Education
Kirby was raised in the City of Rye and attended Rye High School, where he excelled in both baseball and basketball. His dominance as a pitcher was evident early in his high school career. As a sophomore in 2014, he threw a remarkable 153 pitches to lead Rye to victory in the Section 1 Class A championship game. He continued to impress throughout his time at Rye High, finishing his senior season in 2016 with a 6–0 record, a 0.32 earned run average (ERA), and 73 strikeouts in 43⅓ innings pitched. Over his final three years in high school, Kirby did not lose a single game on the mound.
After graduating from Rye High School, Kirby attended Elon University in North Carolina, where he continued to develop his pitching skills. During his junior season in 2019, he posted an 8–2 record with a 2.75 ERA, striking out 107 batters while walking only six in over 88 innings—a level of control that made him one of the most efficient pitchers in college baseball.
Professional Baseball Career
Kirby was selected by the Seattle Mariners with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the 2019 MLB Draft. After beginning his professional career in the minor leagues, he made his major league debut on May 8, 2022, pitching six scoreless innings and striking out seven batters against the Tampa Bay Rays.
He finished his rookie season with an 8–5 record and a 3.39 ERA across 25 starts, quickly earning praise for his elite command and maturity. In 2023, he solidified his status as one of the league’s top young pitchers, finishing the season with a 13–10 record, a 3.35 ERA, and 172 strikeouts in 190.2 innings. His performance earned him a selection to the MLB All-Star Game and national recognition for his precision on the mound—he led all qualified MLB starters in fewest walks per nine innings.

Connection to Rye, New York
George Kirby’s family roots run deep in Rye—both of his parents grew up here, and their families have called Rye home for generations. His mother’s family, the McGuire family, founded and continue to operate Jerry’s Post Road Market.
“That is usually his first stop when he visits during the offseason,” his father, George Kirby Sr., told MyRye.com. “I think growing up in Rye and being surrounded by so much family is what keeps him grounded and humble.”
In his youth, Kirby began playing baseball at five years old in the T-Ball League. Two years later, he joined the Rye Little League. “You can’t get this far without great coaches,” Kirby Sr. added. “Mike Bruno, the Rye High School baseball coach and John Aguilar, the Rye High School basketball coach were his biggest influences in high school.”
Despite his success on the national stage, Kirby has remained connected to his hometown and his alma mater, Rye High School. In 2023, he returned to pitch at Yankee Stadium against the New York Yankees, the team he rooted for growing up in Rye—a full-circle moment that brought Rye High School and Elon University alumni to cheer him on. Kirby also recently donated equipment, including cleats and baseball bags, to Mike Bruno and the RHS baseball team.
