To kick-off the 2025 fall football campaign the Garnets bus up the New York State Thruway to Middletown, New York and a Week Zero contest with Section Nine’s MIDDLETOWN MIDDIE BEARS.
You might ask, “What are Middie Bears?” The Old Garnet would answer “IDK”. What little research we were able to complete by press time tells us that the Middie Bears compete in Section 9’s Class AA and tackle some squads historically familiar to the Garnets – including Port Jervis, Goshen and Our Lady of Lourdes, when the OLL Warriors competed as all-sport members of Section One. The Garnets have on-field experience playing twice in the Middie Bears Football Complex as a neutral site during regional rounds of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (“NYSPHSAA”) Football Tournament, so the “Home Field” advantage should not be as acute.
The Blue and White tallied a 51-43-0 .543% winning percentage over the past ten fall seasons with 2023’s 9-2 record standing head and shoulders as their best season of the past decade. Week Zero is the high school football equivalent of baseball’s Spring Training, so don’t expect on-field perfection from either squad. The Middie Bears prepped for the upcoming campaign with a Team Sleep-Away Camp at night with ”Marine Day” drills and activities puncturing daylight practice hours.
It isn’t pretty, but the Jak Rabbit carries the Garnets happily home on 87 South – 28-20.
