Garnets Football is back, and with authority: Rye crushed Middletown to open their season by a final score of 63-20. The Garnets took a 49-7 lead into halftime and added onto it in the home stretch for the explosive victory.
“It was a very good start to our season, especially on the offensive side of the ball,” Head Coach Dino Garr told MyRye.com after the game. “We were cooking on all cylinders.”
Charlie Garnett found paydirt twice in the first quarter, while Carson Miller ran for one and threw for three before being lifted for Charlie Brady in the third quarter. Thomas Goldszer, Henry Shoemaker, Sebastian Lewis, Ben Stigliano, and Jagger Fenton all found the end zone.
Garr confirmed after the game that 63 points is the most he remembers any of his teams ever scoring. He has been coaching for 50 years.
The head coach gave special props to his offensive line for their performance, allowing the skill players to find so much room with the ball: Carsten Steinmann, Jack Anderson, Gavin Fitzpatrick, Benji Kaplan, and first-time starting center Jake Schonberg. “Those five guys were really solid for us,” Garr noted.
Rye (1-0) will likely have a tougher time with their next opponent, Somers, in Week 1. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00pm under the lights at Nugent Stadium on Friday, September 12. Watch it here.
