The Rye Field Hockey team lost all three of their games to Lakeland in 2024, including in the sectional semifinals. On Thursday, September 26, the Garnets came from behind to top the Hornets 2-1 and avenge the heartbreaks of last season.
“This game was a battle especially coming from behind going into the second half,” first-year Head Coach Valerie Perkins told MyRye.com on Friday. “In the 3rd quarter, we found our rhythm and were able to capitalize with two goals.”
Lakeland entered the second half with a 1-0 advantage, but the Garnets responded in the third quarter with back-to-back tallies from Sienna Myers and Beau Whaling. Myers capitalized on a penalty corner, while Whaling buried a reverse shot from the top of the circle. However, the story of the game for the Garnets was on the other end of the field.
“Chloe Holden had 13 saves to help keep us in the game, many happening in the second half,” Perkins said of her star goalie. “One save in particular that stands out was shortly after we scored our second goal, a Lakeland player went one on one with her and she had an incredible stop to keep our momentum going.”
Rye’s effort is their first comeback win of the season, and it marks their best victory of what has been a fantastic start to the 2025 season. Rye is currently in action at Scarsdale looking to get to 8-1 on the year. Watch the Lakeland win here.
