After a big win against Middletown, Rye Football hosts Somers in week one, looking to avenge their only defeat from the 2024 season in the State finals.

For the game preview, we turn to the Steve “The OG” Feeney, the voice of Garnet football:

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12               SOMERS TUSKERS @ RYE GARNETS                         7:00PM

The circus tent has been furled for the winter and the King Kone roadside ice cream snack shop closed for the summer season. Like leaves that transform coloration and drop, it must be time for the annual renewal of the best of Section One North (Somers) versus the king of Section One South (Rye) – this time in a regular season clash between the SOMERS TUSKERS and the Garnets of Rye. Historically the teams have been evenly matched, and the similarity of the school colors of the Tuskers’ Silver and Red and Rye’s Garnet and Black make it even more difficult to tell the teams apart.

Expect three rings of action on the Nugent Stadium turf headlined by two potent offenses, as the three-time NYSPHSAA Class A Champion (2022, 2023 & 2024) Tuskers lock ivory with the NYSPHSAA Class B Champion (2023) Rye Garnets. The historical ledger card reads 10-11-0 (.476), favor Somers, and while the Journal News Sportswriters call the game by a 28-24 Tusker tally. Always the contrarian, OG knows that these Garnets love playing at home, especially a rare home contest against Somers. This game the Garnets don’t waste home-field advantage as Rye pulls away in the 4th quarter to a 31-24 final.

OG is just curious, but why does the Somers Coach’s Father, and retired Somers Head Football Coach, Top-Tusker Tony DeMateo, Senior have sideline privileges, and by extension, game and halftime access to the game’s officiating crew?

THE OLD GARNET, ALWAYS GUILTY OF BEING A “HOMEY”, SAYS: “TUSKERS LOSE THEIR LUSTER”

IT’S RYE BY THE WIDTH OF AN ELEPHANT’S EYE LASH – RYE GARNETS 31 SOMERS TUSKERS 24
