The Rye Girls Squash team earned their second Fairwest League win of the young season on Wednesday, December 10, defeating Staples High School 5-2 at MSquash in Port Chester. The Garnets also swept the extra matches to win 8 of 10 matchups played on the evening to improve to 2-0 in league play this year.
“Sophomore Natalie Hofmann won her first match of the season, staving off a comeback effort to win 3–1 and secure the win,” Head Coach Tony Campbell told MyRye.com on Thursday. “Natalie’s volley serve returns gave her a consistent advantage and she was able to control the points in dominant fashion.”
Sam Coyne and Emma Crozier helped in the winning effort as well, with both the star junior and freshman (respectively) upping their personal win streaks to three. “[They] were an asset to the team, both winning on the court and being available to support their teammates with encouraging tips between games,” Campbell said of the duo after the team victory.
Beyond the official match score, Rye has now swept all the extra matches in all three of their contests so far. When it comes to roster depth, the Garnets are the gold standard.
Rye (2-1, 2-0 Fairwest) have a unique challenge up ahead on their schedule on Saturday, December 13. The Garnets play in the Hopkins Round Robin, which begins at 2:00pm.
