The Rye firefighters union is funding a stash of lanterns that will be given out to seniors for use in the event of an emergency loss of power. Seniors at the Rye Manor (300 Theall Road) and Vienna Senior Housing (250 Theodore Fremd Avenue – both facilities available for those on limited incomes – will be offered the lanterns at no cost. A limited number will also be available to other seniors in the community.

“What’s the thing people need most in an emergency?,” said Barbara Brunner of the Rye Senior Advocacy Committee at the check presentation on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 at Rye Recreation. “If you lose your power, it’s light. Not only is it good for them, but it’s also a good investment for you all. You’re trying to find people, whether it’s the police, the fire department.”

2029 Fundraising, the nonprofit arm of the Local 2029 Rye Professional Firefighters union presented a check for $1,500 to the Rye Senior Advocacy Committee that will fund the purchase of 260 of the lanterns. The senior group will be working with the Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS’ explorer scout troop to hand out the devices.

“We’re so grateful, so happy that you were there and that you awarded us this money,” continued Brunner.
