Leila Kurbusi of the Rye Girls Golf team wrapped up her incredible 2026 season on Tuesday, May 27, shooting a 96 at day two of the sectional tournament. Kurbusi was the Garnets’ lone day two representative, improved as the day went along at Whippoorwill Country Club.

“Qualifying for the second day of sectionals as only a sophomore is a tremendous accomplishment and a sign of a very bright future ahead,” Head Coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com after the action concluded. “Leila represented Rye with class and determination throughout the tournament and will be one of the Garnets’ team captains next season.”

Kurbusi carded a 45 on the back nine to complete her final round of the year, staying competitive with the best golfers in the section. The top scorer finished with a remarkable cumulative score of 68.

Rye finished the year at 12-2 and as league champions. They came in third place in the team portion of sectionals, and Kurbusi ensured they were represented at the individual portion as well. The rising junior will be a key piece of the Garnets in 2027, as a leader and top player.
