Early Life and Family
James Sands was born on July 6, 2000, in Rye, New York. He grew up in a sports-oriented family alongside his twin brother, fellow professional soccer player Will Sands. From an early age, the brothers were immersed in the highly competitive youth soccer environment of Westchester County, where James quickly developed a reputation for his calm demeanor, strong soccer IQ, and versatility on the field.
Raised in Rye, Sands spent much of his childhood playing youth soccer locally before joining elite regional development programs. His technical ability and maturity stood out at a young age and eventually attracted the attention of professional scouts and U.S. Soccer youth national team coaches.
Youth Soccer Development
Sands began his youth soccer career with New York Soccer Club around 2010 before joining the academy system of New York City FC in 2015. He became part of the club’s inaugural U-16 academy class and quickly emerged as one of the organization’s top prospects.
As a youth player, Sands regularly competed against some of the best academy talent in the country while also representing the United States in international youth competitions. His ability to play both defensive midfield and center back made him particularly valuable, as coaches praised his positioning, composure under pressure, and passing ability.
Becoming NYCFC’s First Homegrown Player
In 2017, Sands made history when he signed with New York City FC as the club’s first-ever Homegrown Player at just 16 years old. The signing represented a major milestone not only for Sands but also for NYCFC’s player development system.
Later that year, he made his Major League Soccer debut, coming on as a substitute against the Colorado Rapids in September 2017. Over the next several seasons, Sands steadily developed into one of the league’s most reliable young defenders and midfielders.
His versatility allowed him to fill multiple roles for NYCFC, and his disciplined style of play earned the trust of coaches and teammates alike.
MLS Cup Championship and National Team Success
Sands’ breakout professional season came in 2021, when he helped lead NYCFC to its first MLS Cup championship. His defensive consistency and tactical intelligence became central components of the club’s success during its playoff run. He was also named NYCFC’s 2021 Young Player of the Year.
That same year, Sands earned MLS All-Star recognition and made his senior debut for the United States Men’s National Team. He represented the United States during the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup, debuting in the group stages, and helped the Americans defeat Mexico 1-0 in extra time in the tournament final — the winning goal coming from Miles Robinson’s header in the 117th minute.
By his early twenties, Sands had already established himself as one of the top American defensive players of his generation.
Playing in Europe
Sands’ performances in Major League Soccer eventually created opportunities overseas. In January 2022, he joined Scottish club Rangers F.C. on loan, competing in the Scottish Premiership and European competitions. During his time at Rangers he made 41 appearances, lifted the 2022 Scottish Cup, and featured in both the 2021–22 UEFA Europa League final and UEFA Champions League group play.
Playing in Scotland exposed Sands to a different style of soccer and the intense atmosphere surrounding one of Europe’s historic clubs. He later returned to NYCFC before moving on loan to German Bundesliga side FC St. Pauli as he continued his professional development in Europe.
Connection to Rye, New York
James Sands’ connection to Rye is direct and longstanding. He was born and raised in Rye and is consistently identified in official player biographies as a Rye native.
His rise from local youth soccer fields to professional stadiums in the United States and Europe has made him one of Rye’s most recognizable modern athletes. Both James and Will attended Brunswick School, where they were standout members of the soccer team. Even as a freshman, James was simultaneously training with the NYCFC academy and earning call-ups to the U.S. U-15 National Team.
Legacy and Impact
Although still early in his professional career, James Sands has already established himself as one of the most successful athletes to emerge from Rye in recent decades. His journey from local youth soccer to Major League Soccer championships, international competition, and European professional leagues reflects both talent and persistence.

Our former next door neighbors! we remember James and Will as little kids, kicking soccer balls in and around Orchard Lane. The only negative is that they are Philly sports fans, Once singing “Fly Eagles Fly” when I came back from a run. Notwithstanding that, a truly great family, and wonderful neighbors!
