Austrian Speedster Made Rye Home During NHL Career
Michael Grabner is one of the most accomplished professional athletes to have called Rye home. The Austrian-born former National Hockey League winger built a reputation as one of the fastest skaters in professional hockey, playing 640 NHL games and representing his country at the Winter Olympics. During his years in the New York metropolitan area, Grabner became one of several NHL players who chose Rye as their home base.
From Austria to North America
Michael-René Grabner was born on October 5, 1987, in Villach, Austria. He began playing hockey as a child and quickly emerged as one of the country’s top young prospects. At age 17, he moved to North America to play junior hockey with the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League, a move that dramatically accelerated his development and put him on the radar of NHL scouts.
His combination of blazing speed, offensive skill, and scoring ability made him one of the top prospects in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. The Vancouver Canucks selected Grabner with the 14th overall pick in the first round.
NHL Breakthrough with the Islanders
After spending time developing in the American Hockey League, Grabner’s career took off when he was claimed on waivers by the New York Islanders in 2010. The Florida Panthers had acquired him in a trade during that year’s NHL Draft but placed him on waivers intending to assign him to their AHL affiliate — a decision the Islanders capitalized on.
In his first season with the Islanders, Grabner scored 34 goals and finished as a finalist for the NHL’s Calder Trophy, awarded to the league’s top rookie. His speed made him one of the most dangerous breakaway threats in hockey and a constant threat on the penalty kill.
Grabner spent five seasons with the Islanders from 2010 through 2015, becoming a fan favorite on Long Island and helping establish himself as one of the league’s premier shorthanded scoring threats.

A Career Across the New York Metro Area
Few NHL players have worn the jerseys of all three local NHL franchises. Grabner is among that select group.
After his Islanders tenure, he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs before returning to the metropolitan area with the New York Rangers. He later spent time with the New Jersey Devils, making him one of the rare players to skate for the Islanders, Rangers, and Devils during his NHL career.
His NHL résumé also includes time with the Vancouver Canucks and Arizona Coyotes. Over his career, he scored 175 NHL goals while earning a reputation as one of the league’s fastest skaters and most dangerous penalty killers.
Representing Austria on the World Stage
Grabner was one of Austria’s most prominent hockey players of his generation.
He represented Austria in multiple international competitions and starred for his country at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. During those Games, he scored five goals across four games, including a hat trick against Finland, finishing tied for the tournament lead in goals scored.
His success helped raise the profile of Austrian hockey internationally and inspired a new generation of players from a country not traditionally considered a hockey powerhouse.
The Rye Connection
During his NHL years in the New York area, Grabner made Rye his home, drawn like many professional athletes to the city’s combination of suburban quality of life, excellent schools, proximity to Manhattan, and convenient access to practice facilities throughout the metropolitan area.
