The New York State Police (NYSP) has new leadership across the two police troop areas that overlap the City of Rye. NYSP recently announced the promotion of Captain Kyle J. Kroeger to the rank of Major and appointed him as the 28th Troop Commander for Troop T, which serves the New York State Thruway. He is replacing Major Brian T. Ferrone, who, it was announced, will assume command of Troop K.
New York State Police Troop T is responsible for the New York State Thruway, and has stations in Westchester County in Tarrytown and New Rochelle. For Rye, this includes the sections of Interstate I-95 and I-287 that run through the City. Troop K serves four counties, Westchester, Putnam, Duchess, and Columbia with its Westchester stations in Hawthorne, Cortlandt, Lewisboro, Mohegan Lake and Somers.

Rye’s connection to the New York State Troopers goes beyond just residing in the jurisdiction of both Troop T and Troop K. The current Public Safety Commissioner Mike Kopy came to Rye after more than 3o years of service with the State Troopers. Major Ferrone, now overseeing Troop K, worked for Kopy at various locations 10 – 20 years ago.
“He’s a competent professional who has risen quickly through the ranks and is trusted to be in this important position,” Kopy told MyRye.com.
The primary responsibility for Troop T is patrol operations on the Thruway property. Troop K provides the support services for all the municipalities in the troop, as well as dedicated patrols in those areas where they’re the only police agency.”
Troop K also provides support services for local police agencies in its four county jurisdiction including its bureau of criminal investigation, plain clothes operations, assistance with warrants, counter terrorism and forensics.
A number of incidents in Rye, many of which come off of Interstate 95 which is a part of the New York State Thruway, are dealt with in conjunction with the NYSP, like in the case of the recent vehicle collision off of exit 11 at Boston Post Road near Rye Country Day School.
