Robert F. Tardio, 97, passed away on August 6, 2026, in Rye, New York.
Robert was born on April 20, 1929, in the Bronx, New York, to Ames A. Tardio and Marie Antongniottzi Tardio. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from New York University in 1950 and continued his studies at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. He later received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Maryland in 1986.
From 1951 to 1953, Robert served his country in the United States Army Infantry. Following his military service, he began a distinguished career in banking and financial services that would span several decades.
Robert began his banking career with Manufacturers Trust Company “Manny Hanny” in New York in 1953, rising quickly through the organization before continuing his career in New Jersey and Maryland. He went on to serve as president, chairman, and chief executive officer of several major regional banks and bank holding companies.
In 1974, Robert joined Suburban Trust Company in Maryland and became President of its holding company. He later served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Suburban Bancorp, guiding dramatic growth in the organization. In 1986, he helped lead the company through its merger with Sovran, after which he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sovran Bank of Maryland and Chairman of the Executive Committee of Sovran Financial Corporation culminating in the creation of Nations Bank/Bank of America.
Robert’s commitment to public service extended well beyond banking. He served on the Board of the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority from 1990 to 1997 and as its Chairman from 1994 to 1997. During his tenure, he helped lead the multi-billion-dollar expansion of Washington Dulles International Airport and the construction of Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
He also maintained a long and meaningful relationship with the University of Maryland, serving as a Regent and as the founding Chairman of the University of Maryland Foundation for more than a decade.
Throughout his life, Robert gave his time and leadership to numerous civic, cultural, charitable, and corporate organizations in the Washington region. His service included leadership and board roles with organizations such as Holy Cross Hospital, the Federal City Council, the National Symphony, the Washington Opera, and the Archdiocese of Washington.
For all of his professional accomplishments, Robert’s greatest and most enduring commitment was to his family. He and his beloved wife, Katherine White Tardio, were married for 68 years, sharing a life together centered on family, friendship, and service to others.
Robert is survived by his wife, Katherine Tardio; his three children, Christine Tardio, Robert Tardio Jr., and Douglas Tardio; and his four grandchildren, Ames Tardio, Ethan Tardio, Caitlin Tardio, and Collin Tardio.
Robert will be remembered not only for the institutions he helped lead and the communities he served, but most importantly for the life he shared with Katherine and the family they built together.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Thursday August 13, 2026 at 10:00 AM at the Church of the Resurrection in Rye, NY.
