Hugh Nevin Fryer died peacefully at his home in Rye, New York, on September 21, 2026, following a brief illness. He was 88 and a retired attorney.
Born in Philadelphia on June 11, 1938, to the Reverend Dr. William Hugh Fryer and Myrtle Fryer, he graduated from the Episcopal Academy in 1956 and from Brown University in 1960. At Brown, he majored in classics and served as managing editor of the Brown Daily Herald. Hugh earned his law degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he served on the Board of Editors of the Law Review. Upon graduating from law school, he served six years in the U.S. Army Reserve. In 1971, he and his wife Geraldine, along with their four children, settled in Rye, their home for the next 55 years.
He began his legal career at Dewey Ballantine in 1963 and rose to partner. There, Hugh served on the trial team that defended AT&T in the Justice Department’s landmark antitrust case, which culminated in the 1982 breakup of the Bell System. In 1985, he founded the firm of Fryer & Ross, where he practiced until retiring in 2008.
He never lost his love for learning and earned a master’s degree in classics from New York University. Reading was not a hobby for Hugh but a way of life. He read ancient Greek every night, even in his later years. He also had a passion for opera, especially the Metropolitan Opera and England’s Glyndebourne Festival. Hugh enjoyed spending summers sailing on Long Island Sound and frostbiting in the winter months. He was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Club, the Knickerbocker Club, the American Yacht Club, and the University Club of Washington, D.C.
He is survived by Geraldine, his wife of 61 years, and their four children: Jacqueline Fryer Chewning of Annandale, Virginia; Robert Fryer and his wife, Connie Kostacos, of Cos Cob, Connecticut; John Fryer and his wife, Sarah, of New York, NY; and James Fryer and his wife, Jennifer Sprague, of Phoenix, Arizona. He is also survived by six grandchildren and his niece, Brooke Barrington. He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Alda Barrington.
Friends may call at the Graham Funeral Home in Rye on Wednesday, September 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Christ’s Church in Rye on Thursday, September 24, at 12:30 p.m.
