The Rye Boys Soccer team escaped with a roller coaster of a 6-4 win on Tuesday, September 22, as they defeated Walter Panas at home. The teams combined for ten goals, a la England-France at the World Cup, including six in the second half, but it was the Garnets who found a way to win.
“It was obviously a wild score line with a lot of ups and downs for both teams,” head coach Jared Small said. “The match was played at a very fast pace, and we played with the bravery that we asked for from the players in the second half.”
Kasen Scarperi showed out for the home crowd, scoring four times in a career performance. He opened the scoring in the 5th minute, tied the score in the 31st, put Rye in front in the 53rd, and potted the eventual game-winner in the final eight minutes.
“Kasen’s four goals were of course the headline, but it was his defending that was even more impressive,” Small told MyRye.com. “He put in the work in the back press and repress, and – not surprisingly – great things came on the offensive side.”
Connor Dehmer scored the other two goals, both late in the contest. His first gave Rye a lead they would not relinquish in the 73rd minute with a clutch finish before adding insurance in the final minute. Filip Glitterstam set a new career high with three assists, all coming in the final eight minutes.
Panas handed Rye their first deficit of the season (2-1 in the first half) and also scored four times as many goals as Garnet opponents had through the first five matches, but it was not enough. Rye has now proven they can win in different ways and proven they can respond to adversity.
