The fire that broke out on Rye Playland’s iconic Dragon Coaster the night of Saturday, September 19, 2026 was accidental and caused by construction work involving the use of a grinder and power drill, according to official sources.
The determination was made by the Westchester County Emergency Services’ Cause and Origin (C & O) team that investigates fires. Officials say the C&O investigation reports construction work was going on approximately 30 feet up in the roller coaster’s wooden structure the afternoon of Saturday, September 19th.
The use of a grinder in a power drill caused the accidental fire. The fire had delayed development due to prolonged smoldering in the wake of the construction activity.
Immediately after the fire on September 20, the City of Rye Fire Department told MyRye.com the cause “remains under investigation but is currently suspected to be accidental. The exact source of ignition has not yet been determined.”
Dragon Coaster Fire
The Rye Fire Department was dispatched to Rye Playland at 8:43 p.m. on Saturday evening, September 19, 2026 for a reported fire in the area of the Dragon Coaster. Firefighters arrived on scene in under four minutes and encountered an active fire involving the roller coaster.
Due to the size and construction of the structure and the potential for the incident to develop into a larger and more complex fire, additional resources were immediately requested. Rye firefighters quickly stretched a hose line and placed water on the fire, bringing it under control within approximately 15 minutes of arrival.
Park officials said at the time the damage was believed to be repairable.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins also said at the time “Thankfully, the damage can be repaired by Playland’s maintenance team and we expect that work to take place during the fall.”
Other Fires
On July 9, 2017, a fire broke out at the top of Playland’s historic, 102-year-old Grand Carousel. The most destructive fire in the park’s history occurred in the early morning hours of July 10, 1966 destroying 15% of the park.
The 2027 season will represent the 98th season for the Dragon Coaster and the 99th season for Playland Park.
