The No. 1 Rye Girls Soccer team took care of business in round one of the sectional tournament on Saturday, as they eliminated #16 Nanuet with a 5-0 victory. The Garnets entered the game as huge favorites and comfortably warded off the upset to advance to the sectional quarterfinals.
“Rye delivered a strong performance, highlighted by an excellent start to the second half,” head coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com.
Shira Rand found Princeton commit Hannah Jachman for the opening goal before Jachman set up Harkin Brown to double the lead shortly after. Eleanor Pandl struck from way downtown to add another goal before halftime on a fantastic finish.
After the break, the Garnets kept pressing as Charlotte Keenan scored a penalty kick and then assisted on Brown’s second of the contest. Savage managed to make some substitutions to let his starters rest, including goalkeeper Blake Sasse, who split the shutout with Mae Haesslein.
#1 Rye (15-0-2, 1-0 postseason) will look to reach the sectional final four with a victory in their next game over #8 Sleepy Hollow. The Garnets will host their final home game of the year on Tuesday, October 27 – a 5:30pm kickoff.
