Like the Cleveland Indians (Guardians), Washington Redskins, Dartmouth Indians (Big Green), Stanford Indians (Cardinal), St John’s Redmen (Red Hawks), Syracuse Orangemen (Orange), and locally the Ossining Indians (Pride) and Nyack Indians (Red Hawks), the John Jay Indians this 2021 season have taken the politically correct move of dropping the Indian mascot label in favor of the Wolves.
By the way, whether they be the Indians, Wolves or even the John Jay Statesmen, Purple and White games with Rye have always been high scoring and entertaining contests, and this critical Section One Class A quarter-final match promises to be no exception. In fall seasons past, the former Indians have encircled Rye’s wagons and are only one of four Section One teams holding a historical advantage over the Garnets by a 6-4-0 (.600) margin, the others being Edgemont at 8-3-0 (.727), Port Chester 5-4-2 (.545), and Tuckahoe 4-4-3 (.500).
As for tonight’s playoff game, note that the kick-off has been moved forward from 7:00pm to 5:30pm due to the predicted heavy rainstorms. The Old Garnet forecasts that the Wolves are left howling at the remnants of the Hunter’s Moon as the Garnets advance to the Class A semi-final, 38-20.
