Garnet Football Finishes Polishing John Jay
In a bizarre two-part football match that was cut short Friday night by a power outage, Rye Boys Varsity Football returned to Nugent Stadium at 10am on Saturday to finish polishing John Jay Cross River. The Garnets ended with a glowing 28-6 win and will host Mahopac Friday night in the team’s advance. The winner of that game plays for the championship.
It was the first such two-part game at Nugent played by Rye Boys Varsity Football Coach Dino Garr, although he did recall an away game at Somers a few years ago that was also blacked-out. Rye returned to Somers the next morning and won that game too. One part or two, Garr was happy with the result from Friday night and Saturday morning.
“Our secondary -Caleb Wexler and Rafferty McSweeney – did a great job of playing tough man-to-man,” said Garr. “The same thing is true with Sam Mead. Our secondary was why we were so successful.”
“Mason McComb and Jack Garnett were just outstanding both on the run and the pass play. Our line play with Teddy Berkery and Bobby Townsend and (Charlie) Saurack did a great job.”
