THE TALE OF THE TRIBES
One week the opponent (John Jay Cross River) follows the politically correct movement dropping the Indian mascot in favor of the wolves. Others in the past have done the same (Nyack and Ossining). But arriving tonight at Nugent for the first time in Section One football history, this season having dropped down from Class AA, the Garnets welcome the Mahopac Indians, Algonquin for “Lake of the Great Serpent”. The Mahopac community has elected to retain the their longstanding Indian mascot. In Mahopac not only is the mascot question percolating, but pronunciation of the town name has bubbled for decades. Is it “ma-HO-pac” as some say or “MAH-o-pac” as others prefer to call it.
These Indians from the north enter tonight’s skirmish carrying a 6-2 record on their pintos including last week’s tomahawking of Clarkstown North in the quarter-final round. Much to OG’s surprise the Journal News Sports Desk tags the Indians as a road favorite tonight. It stretches the geezer’s memory to recall the last time the Garnets were a home ‘dog. Perhaps the DeMatteo mystique has infected the Journal News?
This is a toughee for OG as he never picks against his beloved Garnets. With no prior history and no common opponents, some of his usual tools are unavailable. But the Journal News just stirred the pot and punched the beehive by making Rye the “Home Dog”. Rye rides that motivation to Arlington and the Section One Class A Final (against Somers and some more DeMatteos?). OG calls it Rye 24 – 17.
