Stopped by Somers, Garnet Football Ends Season Just Short of the Dome

Garnet Football ended its season run on Friday night just short of a trip to the Carrier Dome for the state title. Somers made one more big play than Rye, and took the NYSPHSAA Class A semifinal at Middletown High School by 14-7.

The Garnets had a great run this season. “I’m so proud and obviously pleased – the staff is (too),” said Rye Boys Varsity Football Head Coach Dino Garr. “The players have worked extremely hard. It was a dedicated bunch of young men especially led by the captains, the six captains, the seniors. We had 24 seniors and it showed in terms of how they persevered and how they continued to do the best they could, I think with a lot of adversity both on the field and off. So I’m really proud of what this group was able to accomplish.”

“It came down to two big plays on their part and we only got one big play,” said Garr on the Somers game. “They were a little bigger and stronger than we were. We did not give up. We were there. We had a chance to win again – you know, it came down to one play. You never know. It could have gone to overtime which would have been interesting.”

Garr received a shout out from New York Jets football coach Robert Saleh Friday and was named the “coach of the week”. The Jets have invited Garr and his wife to attend their game on Sunday, December 12th vs. the New Orleans Saints where they will be in a luxury box and Garr will be recognized during a halftime ceremony. A great way to cap a great season.
