In Memory: Robert L. “Rob” Mead Jr., Age 70
Robert L. “Rob” Mead Jr., 70, of Groton, artist, historian and patriot, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022, following a long illness. Born in New Rochelle, N.Y. he was the son of the late Robert L. Mead and Marian (Slade) Mead.
Rob grew up in Larchmont, N.Y., attended local schools; and was a graduate of Parsons School of Design. During his years at college, it was in photography class in 1971, where he met his wife, Marguerite Corcoran. Upon graduation, he went to work as an art director for various advertising agencies in New York City, and was extremely good at what he did. Some referred to him as a “giant in the industry.” In 1974, he married Marguerite and started a family.
Eventually, Rob began his own company, Robert Mead Associates, representing commercial photographers in the advertising field. After living in Rye, N.Y., for many years, he moved his family to Mystic, a decision he and his family never regretted. A few years later, he and his wife opened the Devon House Antiques and Gallery in the Stonington Borough.
Rob loved history, reading, art, music, birds, his faithful dogs, and of course, antiques. He enjoyed his Black Russian and bourbon cocktails, lobster dinners and anything to do with collecting historic and pirate memorabilia. He will be remembered as a wonderful husband, adoring father and good friend. His creativity, true patriotism and his great sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife Peggy, he leaves his two daughters, Amanda Mead and Allison Mead with her partner Mark Collins; his sister Joan Eaton and her husband Austin; two nephews, Austin and Benjamin Eaton; niece Molly Kawachi; a sister-in-law, Judy Corcoran; and his beloved dog Piper.
His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 31, at the Mystic Funeral Home located on Route 1, in Mystic. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the Elm Grove Cemetery, Mystic. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to a charity of your choosing.
