In Memory: Mary (Murphy) Morrissey, Age 95
Mary (Murphy) Morrissey passed away on April 16, 2024, at the age of 95. She was happily married to her firstlove, James Morrissey, who predeceased her in 2005. She was a resident of Rye, NY, for 64 years and, along with James, raised her three children, Michael, Joan, and Thomas there.
A warm and loving mother, she cherished hosting family Sunday dinners where our uncles, aunts, and cousins would come from Manhattan or the Bronx. These gatherings, filled with days at the beach or rounds of golf, always ended with a large meal around a crowded table bursting with laughter and good food.
As her children grew, the table expanded to accommodate friends and neighbors who joined in the fun of this weekly tradition. Mary loved living and raising her family in Rye, and she could often be found at Rye Golf Pool, Rye Beach, or Kelly’s with friends and family.
Mary graduated from Washington Irving High School in Manhattan and attended Pace Business School. She worked as a bookkeeper, an office manager, and retired as the Associate Director of Human Resources at SUNY Purchase in 1995, where she enjoyed meeting the artists, musicians, and dancers who worked in her office during the school year.
She is survived by her sons, Michael (Floy) and Thomas (Debra), and daughter Joan Grace; six grandchildren, Peter Morrissey (Anna), Sean Morrissey (John Brower), Amelia Grace, Alex Grace, Lucas Morrissey (Mary), and Logan Morrissey (Nicholas); and one great-grandson, James Morrissey.
A wake will be held at Graham’s Funeral Home in Rye, NY, on Sunday, April 21st from 7-9 PM. The funeral mass celebrating her life will be held on Monday, April 22nd at 10 AM at Resurrection Church, Boston Post Road, Rye, NY.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donations in Mary’s honor to the following: The Alzheimer’s Association, Little Sisters of the Poor, or SPRYE.
