Boys Varsity Tennis Bites the Tigers

Rye Boys Varsity Tennis bit the Tigers of Mamaroneck on Tuesday, taming the opponent for a win at home 4 – 3.

Rye and Mamaroneck always have a competitive match up. Rye’s number one singles player sophomore Henry Groves played senior Maxim Kalinin who is heading to play college tennis at Tulane University next fall. Kalinin beat Groves in a close match 6-4, 7-5. Nicolas Echlov fell to Owen Zerbib 6-3, 6-3. Eighth grader Timothy Morell played in his first singles match and lost to Max Li 6-0, 6-0, spraining his ankle in the last point.

Doubles matches were also competitive. First doubles team of Alex Gordon and Matthew Templeman from Rye beat Owen Master and Ryan Master in a super tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, and 10-3 in a decisive super tiebreaker. Second doubles freshmen duo of Filip Glitterstam and Lou Kim-Reuter came out strong, beating Charlie Masse and Herschelle Jadhav 6-1, 6-4.

With third and fourth doubles on and the matches tied up, 4th doubles Ty Bibas and Luke Gordon beat Cortland Feuss and Joe Rovv Ottergen 6-2, 6-3. With the loss at third singles, it came down to the third doubles match. Captains Henry Bagley and Henry Paul played Emett Finn and Rafa Rosen. Rye won the first set 6-2. Mamaroneck won the second set 6-2 and it went to a super tiebreaker. Rye squeaked it out with a 12-10 result.

“It was exciting to say the least!,” said Rye Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Sue Dickson.

The team is now 7 – 0. The Garnets host Edgemont for a 4:30pm match at Disbrow on Thursday.
