Up in Smoke? Rye’s Smoke Shop Given Notice
A Purchase Street stalwart may be going up in smoke. The Smoke Shop, a Rye institution for 38 years and purveyor of candy and various tobacco vices, has been put on a short leash, or a short lease, depending on how you look at it.
An unidentified buyer of the 53 Purchase Street building has given the shop a one year extension on its lease. Tony, the Rye Smoke Shop proprietor, would like to stay but does not know how things will turn out.
Do you think there is any merit to a community letter-writing campaign?
I am so upset about the smoke shop being closed down. I just moved here 7 months ago. The smoke shop has been a symbol of greatness in my family.
Is there anything i can do to help?
Thanks,
Sam
Beth:
You are a joke. As a member of the City of Rye Board of Ethics you have continually turned a blind eye to complaints of unethical acts committed by City of Rye officials. Why?
I hope Tony and Peggy stay. I hope you, Otis, Shew, Connors and Plunkett all go away.
We need real accountability and real checks and balances. You, Otis, Shew, Connors and Plunkett do not even come close to fitting that bill.
SAM,
YA-START THE COMMUNITY LETTER CHAIN. SINCE YOU ARE NEW HERE YOU NOW KNOW WHAT IS WRONG WITH RYE. THE RYE SMOKE SHOP HAS BEEN A PART OF ALL OF OUR LIVES FOR A VERY L0NG TIME. IF THE NEW BLDG. OWNERS HAVE A HALF A HEART THE COMMUNITY PRESSURE MIGHT WORK!!!
