Girls Tennis Cruises to 7-0 Victory in Season Opener over JJCR
The Rye Girls Varsity Tennis team came out flying to start their season on Wednesday, sweeping the John Jay-Cross River Wolves 7-0. Rye won in every singles and doubles matchup to claim the dominant victory, battling the heat all throughout the day.
Senior captain Sasha Sherman overcame a 5-2 deficit in the second set to make a remarkable comeback to earn the sweep over her singles opponent. Rye Head Coach Tony Campbell noted that John Jay’s best players were in the top singles spots, which Sherman and the rest of her teammates covered nicely.
Doubles partners of Juliana and Sofia Echlov dropped only two games in a 6-2, 6-0 squashing of their opponents. Charlotte Lorraine and Brooke Gori, both captains and the top doubles team, had to work harder for their sweep, and managed to win close games to earn two 6-2 victories and seal their match. Palmoa Pepper and Ella Poole (pictured above) played to a convincing 6-3, 6-0 win themselves, helping Rye to its 7-0 team score.
Rye moves to 1-0 after handling the Wolves in both teams’ season opener. The Garnets have little time to dwell on this positive result, as they play host to Byram Hills on Wednesday, September 5, at the Rye Recreation courts. This is the second game of a 3-game homestand to open the 2024 season for the 2021 League Champions.
