Historic Philanthropy

In February 2024, Gottesman stunned the medical and philanthropic world by donating approximately $1 billion to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. The donation—reportedly from her late husband David “Sandy” Gottesman’s Berkshire Hathaway fortune—was the largest gift ever made to a medical school in the U.S. It allowed the school to eliminate tuition for all students in perpetuity, ensuring that future generations of doctors could graduate debt-free.

In her announcement, Gottesman said she hoped the gift would allow students to pursue careers in medicine without the crushing burden of student debt, particularly in underserved communities.

Connection to Rye, New York

Ruth Gottesman and her late husband David Gottesman were longtime residents of Rye, New York. The couple lived on Island Drive. They were known locally for their quiet generosity and deep ties to civic and philanthropic institutions, though they kept a relatively low public profile in town.

The couple established The Gottesman Fund in 1965 through which they donated to various Jewish schools in the area including the Ramaz School in Manhattan, the Golda Och Academy, the Solomon- Schecter School of Westchester and the Abraham Joshua Heschel School.
