Quick reaction by a Rye police officer to a suspected opioid overdose avoided what could have been a catastrophic outcome.
On Sunday, August 30th, 2026 Rye Police Officer Lauren Duffy responded to a reported overdose and found a young man unresponsive, not breathing, and not responding to stimuli, according to police officials. Recognizing the signs of a suspected opioid overdose, Officer Duffy immediately administered Narcan (naloxone). The individual quickly regained consciousness and began breathing.
Rye PD said the man was in his late 20s and not a resident of the City of Rye. PD did not disclose the location of the incident.
Monday, August 31, 2026 happens to be International Overdose Awareness Day. This year’s theme, “25 Years On. Still Needed.”, marks 25 years of bringing people together to remember those lost to overdose and take action to prevent future deaths.
In a statement Rye PD said “Yesterday’s incident serves as a reminder that drug overdoses can affect individuals, families, and communities everywhere. Overdoses are preventable, and timely intervention can save lives.”
