RYE GARNETS INVADE LOWLANDS OF THE HUDSON VALLEY – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 21 @ 1:30PM @ SLEEPY HOLLOW HEADLESS HORSEMEN
The eerie squad of SLEEPY HOLLOW HEADLESS HORSEMEN from Ichabod Crain’s and Rip Van Winkle’s fabled Hudson Valley ‘hood host the Garnets in a Saturday afternoon tilt on the lowland shores of the Tappan Zee. For decades, these two squads were SWIAC (Southern Westchester Interscholastic Athletic Conference) rivals and beyond that this 41st paranormal renewal has deep roots back to the ‘40s and ‘50s with occasional battles between Rye and two predecessor Tarrytown high schools – North Tarrytown HS and Washington Irving HS.
These encounters have always been scary, never sleepy, as the Red and White, with their sinister “Hollow Hit” chant coupled with the traditional horseshoe helmets, present an aura and mystique far beyond that of Washington Irving’s legendary stories. Who can forget the white stallion leading the Horseman to battle against the Garnets with the Tappan Zee Bridge as the backdrop? But shhhh, zzzzzzz – don’t wake the slumbering Zeemen who tally only one success over the last three decades, these stampeding spirits still target the Garnets although trailing headlessly 30-12-1 (.714).
