Rye High School will have an official send off for Girls Varsity Soccer as they head to the New York State Final Four tournament on Friday. The community is invited to send off the team at 11:45am this Friday, November 10th in front of Rye High School before they head out to Cortland, New York for the weekend tournament.
“Obviously, this is a very special group of girls who have been working since last November for this moment,” Rye Girls Varsity Soccer Coach Rich Savage told MyRye.com. “When the seniors were freshman these girls won the COVID title, but they did not have a chance to move on because there was no State title. In their sophomore year, this group was co-sectional champions. The match was tied after a full 80 minutes and two 15 minutes sudden death golden goal periods. Each team was crowned a champion, but Rye did not win on the penalty kick so Clarkstown South Advanced.”
“Their junior year, the team was knocked out in the quarter final round of the sectional tournament in a heartbreaking loss to Pearl River. This loss really motivated the team to work hard over the winter and summer months. They are certainly a very special group of girls who support each other both on and off the field. They come to each practice focused, working hard and always trying to improve on both team and individual goals.”
The last time the Rye Girls Varsity Soccer was at States was 2010 and the team lost in dramatic fashion with 23 seconds left in the final overtime. The last time the team won a NYS title was in 2008.
There are only four teams left in New York State for the Girls Soccer in Class A:
- Rye section 1 vs. Lewiston Portal section 6 from Buffalo will play Saturday, at 2:30 at Cortland HS
- New Hartford section 3 from Syracuse will play Shoreham Wading River Section 11 from Long Island on Saturday at 5:00 pm at Cortland High School
- Sunday the winners will play for the State Championship match – 12:00 at Cortland HS – losers travel home
