The Rye Girls Rugby team earned their first sweep of the spring on Thursday, May 1, taking down Horace Mann 24-12 and Hudson Catholic 31-5. Rye entered the weekend 2-2 after splitting their first two Thursdays, and now move to 4-2 with half the season completed.

“The game was back and forth until Rye ran away with the win in the second half,” Head Coach Geri Jones told MyRye.com after the Horace Mann win. “We are very proud of our team.”

Molly Kennedy once again led Rye’s offense, scoring two tries and knocking down two conversion kicks. Giada Paone and Molly Budke also found the try zone in the victory. Rye outscored the Lions 14-0 in the second half.

The Garnets got a breather before they dominated Hudson Catholic in their second game of the day at Nugent Stadium, scoring 24 unanswered points for a 31-5 win. The game was close at halftime, with the Garnets leading 7-5, but a fatigued Hawks team had no answer in the final seven minutes.

“After what looked like an strong beginning for Hudson Catholic, Rye ran away with the game,” Jones told MyRye.com. “Rye made great defensive plays against a powerful Hudson Catholic team.”

The Hawks had a size advantage over the Garnets, but Rye’s speed prevailed in the second half. Kennedy (three) and Elisa Grani (two) were the try scorers in red. Kennedy went 3/5 on conversion kicks. Overall, the star senior captain scored 35 points between the two contests.

The Garnets (4-2) host their final games on Thursday, May 8, when they will host New Rochelle for a two-game series. The first kick is set for 5:00pm at Nugent Stadium. New Rochelle is the only remaining team on the schedule Rye has not yet played this season. Watch the action from this past Thursday here.
