Two cars have been stolen from the Rye train station this September.

Both cars were left unlocked with the keys inside. The Rye Police have repeatedly warned residents for years to remove keys (and other valuables) and lock cars – whether they are in a driveway, street or in this case a train station lot. Apparent some still choose not to listen, creating dangerous situations for themselves, other residents and the police.

The police are calling these two incidents call these “convenience thefts”. Instead of taking to train back to New York City, the bad guys find an unlocked car with they keys inside. Presto, a free ride that cost less than the train and less than an Uber.

The first car, a Jeep Wrangler, was taken on September 2 and subsequently recovered in the Bronx. The second car, a Ford Edge was taken only Tuesday morning (September 9) and recovered by Rye police on Wednesday morning in the Bronx. While these were the first cars stolen out of the train station area this year, there have been other reports of cars been opened and rummaged through, according to police.

The two thefts took place in daylight during mid morning hours. Both cars were tracked heading southbound on I-95 and the Central Avenue crossing. The New York State Thruway has cameras on many overpasses including Central Avenue with active license plate readers (LPRs) monitoring traffic. Forty six local law enforcement departments share camera and LPR data via the Real Time Crime Unit (RTC). Recently stolen vehicles have been recovered in the Bronx and in Newark, New Jersey. A couple years ago many vehicles were being recovered in the area of Bridgeport and Watertown, Connecticut. One of those car thefts was tied to a recent murder conviction.
