Psst! Tell your dog: things are looking good for man’s best friend this fall in Rye.

Playland Beach

First up, county officials have confirmed Playland Beach will open for dogs on Monday, October 6, 2025. The beach will be open from dawn to dusk all winter through Sunday, April 19, 2026. The beach is a perennial favorite among dog owners across the county as long as you don’t mind your doggie returning home a sandy mess.

Rye Town Park

After discussing the issue at prior meetings and not moving forward, a number of well spoken dog owners showed up at last week’s city council meeting to advocate for extended off leash hours at Rye Town Park during the off season. Dog owners John Hunt, William Daily and Randy Stone spoke about the community of dog owners in the park, and that the extension of off leash hours from 6:00am to 9:00am to an additional hour to 6:00am to 10:00am was as much about the community of people (the dog walkers) as it was about the dogs. Stone spoke about how in the wake of losing his dog Dunkin at only seven years only, he had the community of dog owners over to his house to celebrate Dunkin’s life.

The comments were so compelling council members would have made the Grinch look good had they considered a no vote. The council quickly made a unanimous vote in favor of extending off season (October 1st to April 30th) hours from 6:00am to 9:00am to an additional hour to 6:00am to 10:00am.

Give your dog a bone and tell him or her the good news. Dunkin is smiling down on all his two and four legged friends.
