Today meet Rye resident Mark Mulvoy, sports journalist.

What’s your day job?
Mulvoy: I retired as editor of Sports Illustrated on 12/31/96. Since then I’ve taught at Fairfield University, served on two corporate boards, played serious senior amateur golf. No current or planned day job.
Summarize your career in five sentences or less.
Mulvoy: After graduating from BC, I wrote for the Boston Globe, then joined SI in 1965. I wrote about baseball, golf, hockey and pro football. I also wrote 13 books and was Jack Nicklaus’ ghost writer for six years. In 1981 I became an assistant managing editor of SI. In 1984 I became the managing editor of SI and was the ME/and/or publisher of SI until my retirement.
Give us the gist of your Tuesdays at 10 talk.
Mulvoy: I will talk about (1) The decline and fall of the sports print media and what that has meant; (2) The pervasive influence of gambling on sports and on society; (3) The sham that’s called college sports.
Who invited you to speak with the group?
Mulvoy: Tom Murphy, a golf pal and long-time Rye neighbor and friend, asked me to speak … and I happily waived my $75K appearance fee.
Who is the most interesting speaker you have enjoyed?
Mulvoy: The Fonz — Henry Winkler — gave the commencement address at my grandson’s Georgetown graduation this past May and his words were very personal and greatly inspiring.

How would your friends and family describe you in one word?
Mulvoy: He may be wrong … but he’s never in doubt.

Mulvoy: Chase the job … not the money.
Best personal advice you dispense.
Mulvoy: Family first.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why, and who would you take with you?
Mulvoy: Only place I haven’t been: Australia.
Where do you live in Rye and how many years have you lived in the City?
Mulvoy: Since the late ‘90s, we have lived like 7-8 months each year in Vero Beach, Florida. Moved to Rye in 1972. Lived In Loudon Woods until 1985; on Evergreen Ave. from 1985-2005; then Highland Ridge from 2005-2011; and Milton Harbor House from 2011-2024. In Rye, we now live in a one-bedroom loft a two-minute walk to everything.
What are three of your favorite food takeout / delivery restaurants in or around Rye?
Mulvoy: The greatest place in Rye … ever .. was the Rye Smoke Shop with Tony and Peggy holding court.
- Aurora … very noisy but good food.
- Sunrise … great pizza.
- Kneaded Bread… The Sunday donuts are delicious.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Mulvoy: Try to play golf on most days of the week that end in Y.
