The Rye City Planning Commission is responsible for decisions on a variety of land use applications including site plans, subdivisions, wetland permits, coastal consistency determinations, special use permits and outdoor dining permits. The Commission also periodically provides advisory recommendations to the City Council regarding long-range planning concerns and zoning matters.
The next commission meeting is on Tuesday, October 28, 2025 at 7:00pm and is typically held in the City Council room or Mayor’s conference room at Rye City Hall. The meetings provide a look at upcoming developments in Rye, ensuring community members stay informed about significant property changes and planning decisions.
The meeting will include a commission work session on the Rye Country Day School’s major campus expansion project across both sides of Boston Post Road. The work includes the construction of a new academic building, removal of the existing ice rink, and expansion of squash courts and parking areas on the west side of the BPR, and the development of a new athletic field with subsurface parking, an ice rink, field house, pickup/drop-off loop drives on the west side of the BPR. There is also a proposed pedestrian tunnel connecting the east and west campuses beneath Boston Post Road.
Along with the development of the old United Hospital site, these two projects present a potential traffic cauldron at the already busy Rye – Port Chester town line with the Whole Foods and Target shopping center and the swirl of Boston Post Road / Interstate 287 and Interstate 95.
The Rye Park neighborhood showed up in force to the Rye City Council meeting on Wednesday, October 22, 2025 to express concerns over both projects with special attention to traffic and safety impacts in an expansive discussion that lasted over an hour.
