Mario J. Gabelli (born in 1942) is an American investor, asset-management executive and philanthropist best known as the founder and chairman of GAMCO Investors, Inc. (Gabelli Asset Management Company Investors), a publicly traded investment firm whose headquarters has operated in Rye, for more than two decades and continues to operate here today.
Early Life and Career
Mario Joseph Gabelli was born on June 19, 1942, in the Bronx. He graduated summa cum laude from Fordham University in 1965 and earned an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School in 1967, where he studied under Roger F. Murray, a prominent scholar in the value-investing tradition associated with Benjamin Graham.
Gabelli began his career as a securities analyst before founding Gabelli Asset Management Company in 1976. The firm, later renamed GAMCO Investors, became known for its detailed fundamental research and for Gabelli’s emphasis on estimating a company’s “Private Market Value,” a method of assessing what a knowledgeable buyer might pay for a business. GAMCO expanded steadily and was listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol GBL.
Over the course of his career, Gabelli gained national visibility as a value-investing specialist and commentator. He has been widely featured in financial media, and Barron’s named him to its list of leading money managers.

Connection to Rye, New York
From the late 1980s through the mid-2010s, GAMCO Investors listed its headquarters at One Corporate Center in Rye, according to SEC filings. The firm was one of the most prominent financial-services employers in the city during this period and contributed to Rye’s growing presence in Westchester’s investment-management sector.
Public records show that Mario J. Gabelli maintained a residence in the private Belle Haven community of Greenwich, CT (on Field Point Road) until it was sold in 2014.
Philanthropy in the Region
While Gabelli’s largest philanthropic gifts have supported Fordham University, Columbia Business School and Boston College, IRS Form 990 filings for The Gabelli Foundation document charitable giving to numerous nonprofit and educational organizations in New York and Greenwich Connecticut.

Later Life and Legacy
Gabelli continues to serve as chairman and CEO of GAMCO Investors and as chairman of Associated Capital Group, a related publicly traded company focused on alternative investment strategies.
His philanthropic record is extensive. In 2010, Fordham University named its business school the Gabelli School of Business in recognition of his major support. In 2015, he donated $15 million to Boston College to fund endowed academic initiatives. Columbia Business School has also acknowledged his significant contributions. Gabelli is a signatory to the Giving Pledge, the campaign established in 2010 by Bill Gates, Melinda French Gates, and Warren Buffett, where billionaires commit to donating the majority of their wealth during their lifetime or at their death.
