The City of Rye is preparing for a significant winter storm expected to impact the region beginning Sunday, February 22, 2026 and continuing into Monday, February 23. As of Saturday afternoon, the National Weather Service (NWS) indicates most of the snow and wind will come Sunday afternoon into late day on Monday.

“Blizzard conditions expected. Total snow accumulations between 15 and 20 inches, highest amounts across Long Island. Winds gusting as high as 55 mph with isolated gusts up to 60 mph,” said the NWS in its Blizzard Warning. “Visibilities may drop below 1/4 mile due to falling and blowing snow. Whiteout conditions are expected and will make travel treacherous and potentially life-threatening. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree limbs may down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages. Travel could be very difficult to impossible.”
“We are closely monitoring National Weather Service forecasts and have activated enhanced staffing across our essential departments. We are ready,” said City Manager Brian Shea. “We strongly encourage residents to make the necessary preparations for themselves and their families now, as this could be a significant storm.”
To encourage residents to stay off the roads, City buildings, including City Hall and Rye Recreation, will be closed to the public on Monday, February 23rd. All recreation programming is suspended on Sunday, February 22 and Monday, February 23. The City is reminding residents to move vehicles off streets to help DPW crews clear roads efficiently and keep roadways open for police, fire, and EMS. Residents must clear sidewalks adjacent to property within 24 hours of the end of snow accumulation, per Rye City code.
