The Rye Boys Tennis team opened the 2026 season in a big way on Thursday, March 26, as they defeated Mamaroneck 6-1. The Garnets went undefeated in the doubles section to move to 1-0 in an early-season excitement-building match.
“Rye’s 2026 Boys Varsity tennis team came out with a strong start,” Head Coach Sue Dickson told MyRye.com. “It was a good match to start the season and teams were able to work out some kinks and come out with a solid win.”
The top doubles pair of Lou Kim-Reuter and Filip Glitterstam showed no rust, only dropping one set to their counterparts in a 6-1, 6-0 finish. Second doubles (Marcos Becker and Timothy Morell) clutched up to win in the super tiebreaker – 6-4, 2-6 (10-4). They were able to calm themselves and excel during the tiebreaker set after the Tigers’ duo broke them twice during the second set.
Third doubles Tayga Vurol and Philip Karajannis won 6-3, 6-0, while the fourth doubles team of Nate Bertisch and Carter Hudspeth won a close match 6-4, 7-5. Rye was expected to have strong depth coming into the year, and they showed it off against a Mamaroneck team many believe will compete for a league title come early May.
At singles, Henry Groves defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-1, and the Garnets also picked up a win at third singles. Luke Gordon fell in a tiebreaking third set at second singles, Rye’s only team loss of the day.
Rye (1-0) will look to build off this early success in their next match on Tuesday, April 7, at 4:30pm. The Garnets host Clarkstown South in their home opener right after the Easter holiday break.
“This team is cohesive, focused, and improved from the 2025 year,” Dickson told MyRye.com. “We are looking forward to the season.”
