Rye Girls Basketball star forward Phoebe Greto capped off her four-year varsity career by earning two prestigious nominations. The senior was named Rye’s Athlete of the Month for February 2026, courtesy of Rye Athletics, as well as the team MVP, courtesy of Head Coach Margo Hackett.
“Phoebe is named the Most Valuable Player because of the extraordinary impact she has on her team through her performance, leadership, and character,” Hackett told MyRye.com. “A dedicated multi-sport athlete, Phoebe has distinguished herself through her relentless work ethic, competitiveness, and commitment to excellence.”
In her fourth season on varsity and her fifth playing at the high school level – Greto suited up for the JV team in 8th grade – the forward averaged a double-double and reached 1,000 career points, doing so on January 3. Greto also came down with 11 rebounds on her historic night, which resulted in being named the MVP of the game, played at the County Center.
Along with being a star scorer and rebounder, Greto was a crucial leader for a young Garnets team. She was unanimously voted a captain before the onset of the 2026 season, and lived up to those expectations by embodying what it means to be a Garnet.
“Phoebe’s value to the team goes far beyond statistics,” Hackett continued. “She consistently elevates those around her, leading by example through her effort, preparation, and positive attitude. She is always the first to encourage her teammates, celebrate their successes, and step up when the team needs her most.
“Phoebe’s humility, selflessness, and ability to make those around her better embody what it truly means to be an MVP.”
Thanks to her stellar play and impactful leadership, the Garnets advanced to the Class AA semifinals, barely falling to a very strong Ossining team on March 2. Prior to that, Rye won 18 games, including an 12-0 start, a solid showing on senior night against Eastchester, and two playoff victories in the month of February. Greto led her team in scoring in both sectional tournament victories.
For her efforts in February, Greto earned Rye Athletic’s Athlete of the Month, courtesy of the Rye Lions Club. That announcement came off the heels of being named a Con Edison Athlete of the Week in very late January. She would later be named to the All-Section Team and Section 1 All-tournament Team, another testament to her dominant play from inside the paint on both sides of the basketball.
As a further display of her leadership ability was Greto’s involvement outside of Rye High School with the Unified Basketball program. ” During the spring seasons, Phoebe steps up to help organize and lead the program, working closely with athletes and partners to create a welcoming and inclusive environment,” Hackett confirmed. “She helps run practices, encourages every athlete to participate, and ensures that each player feels valued and supported. Her compassion and enthusiasm help to make the experience special for everyone involved.”
Winning Rye Athlete of the Month and Girls Basketball team MVP are retrospective awards for Greto’s years of dedication to being the best player, person, and leader she could. It would have been remiss to fail to acknowledge all of her contributions both on and off the court for a very successful girls basketball program.
“For her exceptional athletic accomplishments and the lasting impact she has had on her teammates, school, and community, Phoebe Greto is a truly deserving recipient of these honors,” Hackett concluded.
Upon graduation, the rising collegiate freshman will head to Denison to continue her academic and athletic career as a women’s basketball commit in the Class of 2030.
This marks Greto’s second consecutive year winning team MVP. She also becomes the sixth senior to win Rye Athlete of the Month, joining Jack Anderson (Wrestling, January 2026), Carson Miller (Football, December 2025), Clare Nemsick (Girls Soccer, November 2025), Lex Cox (Boys Soccer, October 2025) and Emma Lunstead (Volleyball, September 2025).
